A great little metroidvania, with just enough stuff to feel satisfying. Excellent jam game :)
I think you did an especially good job with the world layout, the loop points were very satisfying. Also the boss design was really good for a jam game.
Gonna use this as an example for my metroidvania mapping project I think.
Thanks for the compliments! There are definitely things I’d fix (there’s pacing issues in a couple of parts) if I had more time or came back to it, but I’m also pretty happy with where it ended up.
I’d love to see that mapping project if you’re sharing it publicly somewhere!
Yeah, as a jam game I figured that you didn't want to hear about rough edges this far out.
I sadly don't have a recent simple thing to link to on the exploration project, but this somewhat out-of-date slide deck has an overview. It's a Python library for representing and reasoning about exploration processes in games, with a focus on Metroidvanias. Part of it is a journal format for writing down what you notice and what decisions you make as you explore, and Eyes is both small enough and complex enough that it will be a great thing for me to ask students to work through. You can see my journal file for Eyes here, and a very basic visualization of the final decision graph is here.
I ran into a bug twice now that freezes the game. It happens when you get to the room with the 6 power cells and the eye boss below it. If you kill one of the moving eyes with the whip while moving away it will freeze and soft lock the game.
Yeah, that was definitely a wrong warp, heh. This game was made for MVM 18, in a month, and I’ve not had time to go back and polish a lot fo the edges off. Thanks for recording a playthrough!
Very atmospheric. It immediately sucked me in. plays excellently with a controller. I did very quickly encounter a game breaking bug however. I killed a boss at the same time as it killed me and I saw a yellow powerup fall before I reset. However afterwards the boss was gone and the powerup was back in it's cage with no way to collect it. The music was fantastic but it stopped looping at some point.
Great so far, but in the dual room with the electric beams, I think I defeated the boss but am stuck there (the door doesn't open and nothing seems to make it open).
Thank you for fixing! Came back and successfully played through completely---interesting rebalancing of the slugs and drones, I think I preferred the stronger slugs and weaker drones but not too much difference (but I did miss the slugfest in the one room that is now gone). Thanks also for arrow control options! I used those this time around.

I really like the backstory to this! It was a cool game to play and experience!

Thanks for the bug report!
I believe I tripped over a wrong warp at 16:57. I hit some purple spikes and went to a late game area.

Cool little metroidvania. Love the little character's art style.

nice game! love metroidvanias. How to use vials?
As of yet, I don’t have anything coded in to use them.
I love how it fits together so well! and the gameplay was super smooth and really fun

You’re not the first person to hit that bug, but thanks for such a detailed description of it!
I know how to fix it now…. 10 hours after the late submission deadline, lol.
You can start a new game, and that’ll reset the save game, if you’re okay replaying the first 3-5 minutes of the game.
I know how that feels. lol, still well done on this project!
I figured that and reset it and kept on enjoying it. music still stopped looping after about 5 minutes though.
Huh, the stopping of the music loop is one I don’t quite have a fix figured out for yet.
Great so far, but in the dual room with the electric beams, I think I defeated the boss but am stuck there (the door doesn't open and nothing seems to make it open).
Gotcha, I will be making sure that doesn’t happen, then (there’s more after that)
Okay, that bug should be fixed now

this looks good - but the controls are terrible for me , arrows zxc would be better
I’ve added arrow controls to the game now!
great , thanks !
